Fritz Wahlfield Construction began their work on Pine Creek Elementary in Spring 2021 with an expected completed date of Spring 2022 in mind. The project consisted of a 2,100 square foot, two-classroom addition for West Ottawa Public Schools and an additional 64,000 square feet of renovations.
This included a new HVAC system that had to be lowered into the school through an opening that had to be cut into the roof, new EPDM roofing, Brink on the Wing Walls, insulation, and sheet metal, new ceilings & lighting through the entire school, new fire alarm, PC, & clock and door access systems as well as new flooring and painting throughout the building on walls, lockers, the gym, and more.
The purpose of this new space is to provide students with improved learning spaces. Recycled materials were used as much as possible, and eco-friendly products were used during the new construction.
With a quickened timeline, Fritz Wahlfield Construction mentioned that the amount of work performed under the timeline was a major milestone for both their company and their team, stating, “communication with the design team, owners, and subcontractors were what made this project successful.”
In addition to working with the architect, engineer, owners, and subcontractors, the school administration and staff were a phenomenal part of the process as well. Fritz Wahlfield Construction’s team enjoyed getting to interact with the students and introduce them to the world of construction. The team mentioned, “We have greatly appreciated the student’s and staff’s patience, understanding, and accommodation with our crews being at the school during the school time hours through the entire construction process.”
During the construction process, the team exposed some existing code items that needed to be brought up to current standards. The A&E firm and subcontractors responded quickly to meet the budget and timeline to resolve the code items.
