In the early design phase of Catalyst Development CD-12, Grand River Construction (GRC) was brought onboard to help work through the plans and avoid unnecessary RFI’s and changes. This was a new experience for GRC, who brough project managers and superintendents to design meetings and gave any input they could. In the end, the team at GRC feel that it worked to the advantage of the project.

Catalyst Development’s project consisted of four levels of parking garage wrapped with seven levels of building, approximately 275,000 square feet. With a $13 million concrete scope budget, GRC worked overtime to bring the project together while working with CSM Group as the Construction Manager. Beginning in 2018, Grand River Construction substantially completed the project in March 2020. Weather delays in pouring slab on grade brought challenges, and the GRC team poured a mud mat in order to start pouring the elevated parking garage slabs early. The polar vortex also caused many difficult days and schedule delays.
GRC installed insulated connections on the balconies to ensure energy efficiency and control heat transfer between exterior balconies and the interior building. With help from many subcontractors and suppliers, including Bee Steel, Harris Rebar, Barnsco, and Consumers Concrete, Grand River Construction installed about 16,000 cubic yards of concrete, 2,000,000 pounds of reinforced steel, and 400,000 pounds of post tension cable.
The finished project will benefit the community in Kalamazoo, as it will contain 45 apartments and 4 class A office suites, including offices for The Kalamazoo Promise, Southwest Michigan First, and The Stryker Johnston Foundation.
