The school bond proposal update is ready and the votes are in!
Coldwater Community Schools was the only school district to seek bond voter approval in May 2022 after failing to get bond voter approval in November 2021. In November 2021, the School District had two proposals, one with a $50 million estimate and another with a $17 million estimate. In May 2022, the estimate for the singular bond proposal was $53 million.
The average bond estimate decreased by approximately $6 million between the May 2021 and May 2022 elections. However, the median bond estimate increased by approximately $1.4 million. This seems to be because the highest bond estimates in May 2022 were smaller than May 2021 while the smallest bond estimates in May 2022 were larger than in May 2021. Thus, there are fewer and/or smaller outliers in bond estimates in May 2022 than in May 2021.
The largest bond proposal was for approximately $197 million by Kalamazoo Public Schools. The smallest bond proposal was for $3.5 million by Pickford Public Schools. Both bond proposals passed.
In May 2022, 37.5% of the bond proposals failed. This is an increase from 27% in May 2021, and 28% in November 2021. Two of the bond proposals that failed had a margin of less than 100 votes: the bond proposal from Greenville Public Schools had a margin of 53 votes, and the proposal from the Grant Public School District had a margin of only 22 votes!
