Skymint Big Rapids

Jul 27, 2021 | Member Project Spotlight

Skymint, a cannabis retailer in Michigan, chose CD Barnes Construction to build their newest provisioning location in Big Rapids. The 6,400 square foot facility, located at 840 Clark St, had a budget of over $950,000. Occupying the former Great Lakes Book & Supply building, the new structure features a variety of spaces.

The Skymint Big Rapids project began construction in February and was completed in May of 2021. This facility is for medicinal and adult-use marijuana, giving the local residents another resource for the product.

To make the space more eco-friendly, CD Barnes Construction added skylights to bring in natural light and repurposed existing steel girder beams. The team also upgraded the storefront’s framing and glass to be more energy efficient.

When minor structural challenges occurred, CD Barnes worked with Beer City Metal Works and Patrick Thompson Design to address them quickly. While in the demolition phase, unforeseen existing conditions were discovered. Madsen Concrete came up with a solution that had zero impact on the project budget and schedule. Their problem-solving and professionalism were vital to the success of the Skymint Big Rapids project.

CD Barnes awarded Madsen the ‘Key To Our Success Award‘ for their work. Pete Heinen, who selected Madsen Concrete for the award, mentioned that their ability to adapt to change on short notice was admirable.

For the decorative wood elements inside the building, CD Barnes used White Northern Cedar. This material came from a mill in the Upper Peninsula and is not a typical wood material that is available from most lumber distributors.

CD Barnes installed a cantilevered decorative steel structure at the front entry, highlighted with clear-coated White Northern Cedar purlins and battens. This element was field-painted to complement Skymint’s branding colors. It features LED landscape lights that provide lighting on the structure during the nighttime hours.
